Prof. Henryk Kołoczek, D.Sc., Full Professor

Henryk Kołoczek graduated in Molecular Biology from the Jagiellonian University. The Scientific Council of the Institute of Molecular Biology at Jagiellonian University awarded him a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry in 1986, and later a habilitation degree (postdoctoral qualification) also in Biochemistry based on his dissertation titled “Polymerization and conformational status of human α1-proteinase inhibitor.” In 2006, Prof. Kołoczek received the title of professor at the University of Wrocław, at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Biotechnology.

Prof. Kołoczek completed a three-year scientific internship at the University of Pennsylvania (Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, School of Medicine, Philadelphia), as well as a one-year visiting professorship at the BioScience Center, Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan.

He also undertook short-term research stays in Switzerland and Germany.

Prof. Kołoczek’s research focuses on environmental remediation through the use of microorganisms with specific catalytic properties and specific oxygen donors, mechanisms of heavy metal bioremediation, and studies of protein structure using spectroscopic methods. He applies so-called plasma water in bioremediation processes.

He has supervised five doctoral theses.

Between 2011 and 2014, he was a member of the Biotechnology Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, as well as the Polish Biotechnology Federation, the Polish Environmental Technology Platform, the Kraków Branch of the Polish Society for Ecological Engineering, and a permanent member of the Organizing Committee of the recurring international Eurobiotech conferences.

Since 2002, he has been a member of the Rotary Club "Kraków-Wyspiański" and a past president of this club, where in cooperation with Rotary clubs abroad, he organizes charitable aid for hospitals and orphanages.

For his activities, he has received numerous distinctions from the Minister of Education as well as the Gold Cross of Merit.
